George Condo est un artiste américain né en 1957 et connu pour sa gamme de portraits largement inspirés par le cubisme, le surréalisme et les tableaux de maîtres anciens.

Habile dessinateur  depuis l’âge de 4 ans, il étudie la théorie de la musique et l’histoire de l’art. A travers ses lectures et ses études sur John Cage, Arnold Schoenberg … il identifie les liens entre la philosophie, la musique et la peinture. Le dialogue entre ces différentes langues définit l’art pour George Condo. Après quelques années d’études, il décide de quitter l’université pour devenir peintre.

George Condo is an American artist born in 1957 known for his range of portraits vastly inspired by cubism, surrealism and old masters paintings.

Skilled drawer since the age of 4 he studied music theory and art history. Through his readings and studies of John Cage, Arnold Schoenberg… he identified the connections between philosophy, music and painting. The dialogue between those different languages defines art for George Condo. After a couples of years studying, he decides to quit college to become a painter.

Daniel Arsham présente “The Angle of Repose” qui se tient à la Galerie Perrotin jusqu’au 23 décembre 2017.
L’artiste y revisite la permanence tout en continuant à développer son intérêt pour les cultures asiatiques, les cycles planétaires et sa propre mortalité – un sujet inhérent à sa pratique artistique.
Sur le thème de l’archéologie globale du futur, ces œuvres tracent une ligne fine entre le passé et le futur. Les objets pourraient être des découvertes du futur lointain, des artefacts de notre civilisation actuelle que l’artiste a sculptés et érodés.
“The Angle of Repose” (l’angle de repos) est aussi, par définition, l’angle auquel un matériau se pliera naturellement jusqu’à adopter une forme conique. Il s’agit d’équilibrer les particules, ou la physique, combinées avec le jeu du hasard et une certaine volonté de laisser aller…

In this exhibition, the artist revisits permanency while continuing to expand on his interest in Asian cultures, planetary cycles, and his own mortality —a subject inherent to his artistic practice.
Encasing the theme of a global archeology of the future and poetic ruins, these works tread a fine line between past and future. The objects could be discoveries from the distant future, artifacts from our current civilization that the artist has carved out and eroded.
“The Angle of Repose” is also, by definition, the angle at which a material will naturally bend until adopting a conical shape. It is a question of balancing particles, or physics, combined with the game of chance and a certain willingness to let go…

George Condo présente “Life is Worth Living” qui se tient à la galerie Almine Rech jusqu’au 18 novembre 2017. Cette exposition met en dialogue des œuvres récentes avec un ensemble plus ancien de peintures et de sculptures réalisées à Paris entre la fin des années 1980 et le début des années 1990.

Les nouvelles peintures exposées dépeignent le chaos et la confusion de la situation politique américaine actuelle et mettent en exergue la folle et absolue paranoïa qui enveloppe férocement le monde. Elles sont peintes avec une gestuelle abstraite qui se veut capturer la vitesse à laquelle l’information change, comme l’esprit en ébullition de l’artiste, mais aussi faire écho à l’étrange irréalité du phénomène des « fake news ».

Condo avait prédit ce changement en regard de la perception globale médiatique dès la fin des années 1980 dans un manifeste intitulé Artificial Realism, une expression qui s’appliquait alors à sa pratique et l’évolution de son esthétique, mais qui en est depuis venue à résumer l’essence même de notre confusion quotidienne s’agissant de ce qui est réel et de ce qui ne l’est pas.

George Condo presents “Life is Worth Living” shown at Almine Rech gallery until 18th November 2017. This exhibition include paintings and sculpture he made while living in Paris in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s in conversation with his most recent works made in the past year.

The new works paintings depict the chaos and illusion of the state of political affairs in contemporary America, bringing into focus the mad, unmitigated paranoia fiercely enveloping the world. Paintings take on the subjects of media and political obsession. They are painted in an abstracted gestural manner that captures the speed at which the news is changing and the artist’s mind is working, echoing the strange irreality of the fake news phenomena.

Condo predicted this shift in global media perception back in the late ‘80s in his early treatise on art which he called “Artificial Realism”, a term that applied then to art and its evolution but has now become the essence of our daily confusion over what is real and what isn’t.

Wolfgang Laib est un artiste dont la pratique est inextricable de son mode de vie modeste et hermétique. Fils de docteur, il entame des études de médecine. Passionné de philosophie asiatique, ses parents lui font découvrir l’art tantrique et l’emmènent en Inde. C’est après ce voyage qu’il réalise son premier oeuf en granit noir, un Brahmanda, et qu’il décide qu’il sera artiste et non docteur.

Wolfgang Laib is an artist whose practice is inextricable in his modest and hermetic way of life. Son of doctor, he began studying medicine. Passionate about Asian philosophy, his parents made him discover tantric art and took him to India. It is after this journey that he realizes its first egg in black granite, a Brahmanda, and decides that he will become an artist and not a doctor.
